Manchester United unwilling to sell Newcastle United target Scott McTominay

Manchester United will not sanction the sale of Scott McTominay this month, with Newcastle United one of his suitors.

According to a report by The Athletic, Manchester United will not entertain any enquiry for Scott McTominay as Erik ten Hag views him as an important part of his project. Newcastle United are believed to be an avid admirer of the 26-year-old midfielder.

Manchester United have taken some big steps towards progression. But Scott McTominay has not had many contributions to their recent growth. The Scottish midfielder has endured a drastic fall as far as his game time is concerned, with the arrival of Casemiro degrading his position at the club.

Erik ten Hag has stamped up his authority by keeping the fringe players away from the starting lineup, with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen being his preferred choice in the middle of the pitch. McTominay has thus struggled to make his mark.

The 26-year-old had another chance to impress against Arsenal, but he produced an ordinary display which has further widened the gap as it stands. Newcastle ideally want a midfielder who could be an instant fit in Eddie Howe’s system. And the Manchester United midfielder has been one of the most hard-working midfielders in the top flight.

Manchester United might have to sell a few players to strengthen their financial position. But with only a week left in the January transfer window, ten Hag will be getting any replacements. So the Red Devils will not respond favourably to Newcastle United’s interest.

Manchester United lost their momentum in the top-four race with back-to-back games where they have dropped point. But they are unlikely to make some changes in the transfer market. Their summer outlay has proven to be a burden for their spending capacity. And another squad overhaul is only expected to take place in the summer.

Newcastle are in third place for having a superior goal difference, and they are looking to further improve their squad in this transfer window. The Magpies could test Manchester United with a teasing bid in the next couple of days. But the Red Devils have already let everyone know of their intentions to keep the 26-year-old at least for this entire campaign.
