Newcastle United are said to be interested in Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy and could try an audacious swoop in January.
As per Footmercato, Newcastle United are planning a move for Real Madrid fullback Ferland Mendy and have tabled a lucrative offer for him. The fullback has been a constant presence on the left hand side of the defence.
Mendy has been tipped as the heir to Marcelo as the French international has been Carlo Ancelotti’s preferred choice in La Liga. There have been severe reservations over his inconsistency but the manager is quite happy with his progress.
The 27-year-old was expected to be in Didier Deschamps’ World Cup squad but Lucas and Theo Hernandez were preferred over him as he was overlooked by the French manager.
Everton were interested in the player when he was at Le Havre. The Toffees were told they would need to pay a meagre sum of £4.3 million but the Merseysiders never implemented that move.
Newcastle have been riding high on their recent success and have been chasing Manchester City and Arsenal in the Premier League title race. They will be needing more players to cover multiple positions if they are to remain hot in their pursuit of Champions League football next season.
Mendy is not indispensable at this club and if a suitable offer comes the club would definitely consider it. Los Blancos sold their prime defensive midfielder Casemiro to Manchester United and they could follow that path. It is suggested Mendy will cost a whopping €50 million but offloading him in the midst of the season could pose a serious threat to their ambitions.
Madrid are also interested in Josko Gvardiol and the arrival of the RB Leipzig defender would demote him to the reserve bench. Gvardiol would straight slot to the backline and David Alaba would shift to the left side of the defence.
Newcastle do have a pretty extensive lineup of left-backs and they might have to offload some to make room for Mendy. They do have the financial might to afford the defender but could wait till the summer when his price would drop to some extent.
