Manchester United unlikely to sign Denzel Dumfries in January

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Inter Milan right wing-back Denzel Dumfries in recent weeks, but they are unlikely to land him in January.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano (via Give Me Sport), Manchester United will be priced out of a move for Denzel Dumfries. Serie A giants Inter want to recoup around €50 million for the 21-year-old Netherlands international, a figure that might be exorbitant for the Red Devils, who will prioritise a new striker next month and could be ready to wait until the summer to sign Dumfries.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano said to GMS, “I don’t see them honestly investing crazy money on that position. So, when I see links to Denzel Dumfries, it’s true that they are pursuing the player, but I think it’s going to be really difficult for them to sign Dumfries in January especially having a budget limited because of the Glazer situation and also because they need a striker.

“So, I don’t see the Dumfries deal available for Man United in January.”

Dalot has made the right-back position his own this season. The Portuguese has had little competition for his place from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who lacks the offensive threat and has fallen out of favour under Ten Hag.

When fit, Dalot has been an undisputed preferred choice for the right-back position this season. The manager has a clear preference for Dalot over Aaron Wan-Bissaka for his progressive and ball-playing attributes in the final third.

Dumfries, though, would have been a solid upgrade in the department if Wan-Bissaka does leave for Crystal Palace this January and would have been perfectly suited to Ten Hag’s playing style.

The 26-year-old was a natural right-back during his time at PSV, but in the last 18 months, he has successfully transitioned into a right wing-back role for club and country. An all-action defender with energy, pace, stamina, and athleticism in abundance, Dumfries is a top-class attacking full-back and has proven his credentials on the world stage out in Qatar, as well as in the Champions League for Inter Milan.

The Netherlands international has been constantly linked with a move to the Premier League and it was claimed yesterday that Manchester United manager Ten Hag has his sights set on bringing his compatriot to Old Trafford in the January transfer window.

However, the United boss will have to wait until June 2023 to get his wish, with the United board currently focused on getting a new striker on board in the winter transfer window, which is believed to be a more pressing issue.

The Manchester giants and Ronaldo parted ways after a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan aired. Add to that the fact that Jadon Sancho is not “physically and mentally” ready to feature at the moment; according to Erik ten Hag, there is a desperate need to add another attacking option at Old Trafford.

PSV Eindhoven and the Netherlands’ versatile forward Cody Gakpo, who shone at the winter World Cup in Qatar with three goals, has been identified as Ten Hag’s No. 1 target, and United have already made contact with PSV over a potential €50 million winter swoop for Gakpo.
