Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign a quality centre-back when the transfer window reopens in January.
According to a report from Give Me Sport, Antonio Conte is looking to improve his defensive options. And bringing in a quality centre bank remains a top priority for the Tottenham manager.
Tottenham are currently fourth in the Premier League table, and they will be hoping to secure Champions League qualification for the next season. Antonio Conte will want to end his side’s wait for a trophy as well. In order for that to happen, Spurs will have to improve their squad. A quality defender could improve them immensely.
Tottenham have Cristian Romero at their disposal, and the Argentine has been flawless since his move to London. However, he needs another quality central defender to partner him at the heart of Tottenham’s back four.
The north Londoners have relied on Ben Davies, Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Clement Lenglet so far. But all four players have been inconsistent, and Conte needs to bring in an upgrade in the coming weeks.
Tottenham have been linked with players like Milan Skriniar and Alessandro Bastoni in recent months. But it will be interesting to see if Daniel Levy is prepared to back his manager in the transfer market in January.
Tottenham have a quality squad at their disposal, but they are still a couple of intelligent additions away from truly challenging clubs like Manchester City.
Journalist Michael Bridge has revealed to Give Me Sport that Tottenham would ideally like to bring in more than one player in January. However, a centre-back remains their priority. In addition to that, the north London club could look to solve their right-back problem as well.
He said to GMS, “110%, at least one [centre-back]. I think Tottenham, in an ideal world, would look to maybe get two or three players in.
“One would be a centre-half as the main priority. They’re conceding poor goals and making sloppy mistakes. Then a right wing-back because Emerson Royal, it’s not worked out. He’s not having Matt Doherty and he’s not having Djed Spence either.”
Summer signing Djed Spence has not been able to convince Conte and hold down a regular starting berth. Conte has had to rely on Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty, both of whom have been largely underwhelming this season.
It will be interesting to see if Tottenham can address their major weaknesses during the January transfer window and finish the season strongly now.
