Mikel Arteta drops major hint regarding Arsenal’s January transfer plans

Mikel Arteta has insisted Arsenal need to go big in the winter transfer window following their Carabao Cup defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion.

As mentioned in Talksport, the Arsenal gaffer made it clear he will be needing new players in January to see out the remaining part of the season. The North Londoners crashed out of the cup competitions with a 3-1 defeat against the Seagulls.

Eddie Nketiah celebrated a rare start with a fantastic goal but Danny Welbeck came back to haunt his team with a well-timed equaliser. Kaoru Mitoma and Tariq Lamptey further inflicted more misery with another two goals as Arsenal’s second-string side couldn’t hold back their lead.

A plethora of players from the Gunners squad will be joining the travelling squad of their respective countries in a few days but an encounter with Wolves is waiting in the wings for the Premier League table toppers.

They were one of the busiest teams in the summer as they roped in the likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko, Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira but Arteta feels his squad is still not up to the mark and needs some fresh faces in January.

“That’s the squad that we have and we have to utilise it in the best possible way today we came short, especially because we didn’t do what we have to do in both boxes to win a football match.

“We paid that price. It’s the same squad as when we win.

“I said from day one that we have a short squad because at the end we left some players. It’s what we have.

“If everyone’s available and no one is injured we are OK, but the moment there is, we know what it is.

“It’s nothing new. I think I said it the first day after the transfer window.”

He went on to add, “That’s a window that is open.

“We’ll have to discuss the opportunities that we have, the capacity that we have for any changes and be on the market for opportunities.

“Because we don’t know what’s going to happen in the last game before the World Cup.

“So it’s a lot of options that are open.”
