West Ham United are interested in signing prolific Championship ace Ben Brereton Diaz in the January transfer window
According to Football Insider, Premier League side West Ham United are interested in signing Blackburn Rovers star Ben Brereton Diaz in the upcoming January transfer window.
The Chilean international has emerged as a prolific goalscorer in recent seasons and is currently leading Blackburn’s charge to gain promotion to the Premier League. The 23-year-old is the second flight’s top scorer with nine goals as the Ewood Park outfit sits second in the Championship standings.
These performances have not gone unnoticed, with David Moyes an ardent admirer. He has instructed the Hammers scouts to keep a close watch on the player’s performances ahead of a potential move in the summer.
West Ham saw several players come in last summer but are yet to hit their stride. Two of the players who arrived at the London Stadium were striker Gianluca Scamacca from Sassuolo and Lucas Paqueta from Olympique Lyonnais. Adding them to a roster that already had Said Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen certainly added zing to the frontline.
Primarily a centre forward, Diaz is capable of playing anywhere along the frontline. This gives Moyes options and also gives him an alternative to play two strikers upfront. This will add a new-found dynamism to the Hammers’ lineup and allow them to play a more attacking brand of football.
More so, Diaz’s contract with Blackburn expires next summer, and he is nowhere close to penning an extension. Given that they risk losing him for a free next summer, it could prove prudent for Blackburn to cash in on their star striker in the upcoming January transfer window.
The 23-year-old has scored roughly 30 per cent of Blackburn’s goals this season and selling him will leave a huge void in the attack. With them well-placed to return to the Premier League, it might prove to be a worthwhile risk to ensure they finish in the promotion spots even if it means losing their star man on a Bosman at the end of the campaign.
At 23, Diaz is still developing and would be a long-term addition to the Hammers. They are not the only club in the fray, with Sevilla, Fulham and Everton all interested. With the player open to moving abroad, a lot will depend on just what West Ham can offer the striker.
