Liverpool are looking to agree on a new deal with Brazilian striker Roberto Firmino.
According to a report from Football Insider, the 31-year-old is regarded as an important part of Jurgen Klopp’s plans and the Reds will offer him an extension during the mid-season break.
Firmino will be out of contract at the end of the season and it remains to be seen whether he is ready to commit his future to the club. The 31-year-old has been in impressive form this season and he has eight goals and four assists across all competitions.
There have been rumours that other European clubs are keen on signing the player when his contract expires in the summer.
After an indifferent season last year, Firmino seems to have regained his form and he could be a useful player for Liverpool over the next few years.
The report from Football Insider claims that Firmino might have to take a pay cut in order to secure an extension. FSG does not prefer to offer lucrative deals to players over the age of 30 and it will be interesting to see how the situation develops.
Firmino earns around £180,000 a week right now.
Liverpool decided to let go of Sadio Mane at the start of the season and they have missed the Senegalese international. Letting Firmino leave on free at the end of the season would be a mistake, especially without bringing in a quality alternative.
Although the 31-year-old is in his twilight phase and he is unlikely to get any better, he is still a valuable member of the dressing room. He can play in multiple positions and his versatility is an asset for Klopp.
Apart from his quality as a player, Firmino has been a selfless individual with a tireless work ethic.
The Brazilian has helped Liverpool win the Premier League title and the UEFA Champions League during his time at the club. He has won other domestic cups with the Reds as well.
