Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has shut down Ronaldo to MLS rumours and insists the global superstar will not entertain non-European proposals.
Italian football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has written in his column for Caught Offside that Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is keen to join a European club despite rumours linking him with a move to the MLS and Saudi Arabian leagues.
The Portuguese impressed during his first season back with the Red Devils, netting 24 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions, with 18 of them arriving in the Premier League. However, the 37-year-old is currently enduring a tough time at Old Trafford. He’s been forced to watch on from the bench, including some high-profile games, which has added insult to his situation at the club.
Ronaldo’s apparent refusal to come on as a substitute in United’s 2-0 win over Tottenham before walking off before the final whistle has resulted in the striker being prohibited from participating in the weekend’s Premier League draw against Chelsea.
And Ronaldo may have already played his last game for United unless Erik Ten Hag grants him one more chance to redeem himself, with recent reports suggesting Manchester United could be willing to let Ronaldo leave the club as a free agent in January by terminating his current contract.
Of course, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner actively sought out an escape route over the summer, only to have his efforts met with opposition from the club’s hierarchy, who weren’t able to get a ready-made replacement.
In truth, there was a lack of takers as well, with Chelsea, PSG, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich all believed to be among the clubs to have shut their doors on the global icon.
This has led to rumours of offers from non-European clubs. Romano noted that Ronaldo had a lucrative offer from a Saudi Pro League club during the summer, as well as the recent interest in him from MLS clubs, with David Beckham’s Inter Miami, reported to be plotting a mega-money offer to entice the 37-year-old to America. However, the Italian journalist believes the forward is not interested in leaving European football.
“I’ve been asked about stories about the MLS, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s priority has always been to continue in Europe,” Romano told Caught Offside.
“He was approached by a club in Saudi Arabia in August, but he wanted to continue in Europe. As of now, there are still no different indications.
“I’m sure his agent will explore the market in the next 1-2 months, and we will see what happens.”
It’s safe to say Ronaldo is currently going through the most forgettable season of his entire career. One would think he is a shadow of his former self simply by looking at this season’s stats for him.
He is likely to push for a move in the upcoming window, but very few clubs in European football would likely possess either the financial means or willingness to sign the veteran striker.
There has been talk of Chelsea reigniting their interest in Ronaldo to replace Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, who is being courted by PSG. However, Blues boss Graham Potter is preferring a move for Rafael Leao over Ronaldo.
