Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen at the end of the season.
According to a report from Jeunes Footeux, Tottenham have identified Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen as the long-term replacement for club captain Hugo Lloris.
The 35-year-old Frenchman has not been at his best this season, and he recently cost his side against Arsenal in the North London Derby. It was his error that allowed Gabriel Jesus to pounce and score for the Gunners in a crucial encounter.
According to the report, the Tottenham hierarchy are no longer convinced of Lloris’s quality. And the north Londoners are looking to bring in a replacement soon. Apparently, ter Stegen is a priority target for Antonio Conte. And it will be interesting to see if Spurs can agree on a fee with Barcelona for the German international.
There is no doubt that the Barcelona ace is a world-class player who is very much at his peak. Ter Stegen would be an update on the Tottenham captain. Furthermore, the report adds that Barcelona might be willing to sell the player for the right price at the end of the season. The 30-year-old German has a contract until 2025.
Another player who has caught Tottenham’s attention is French goalkeeper Alban Lafont. The 23-year-old recently earned a call-up to the French national side, and he has impressed with his performances in the French league with Nantes. Spurs have shown interest in Jan Oblak as well.
As far as ter Stegen is considered, the German has been playing at a high level with Barcelona for a number of years and has won multiple trophies during the course of his career. Apart from his quality, his trophy-winning experience might also be invaluable for Tottenham.
Conte is an ambitious manager who will want to sign top players like ter Stegen. And it remains to be seen whether Tottenham can match up to his ambitions in the transfer market next summer.
The Tottenham boss is often ruthless in pursuit of trophies. And Conte has left clubs previously because of the lack of ambition in the transfer market. It will be interesting to see whether Daniel Levy is ready to bankroll another significant window for his manager.
