Newcastle United have reportedly made an enquiry about a late loan move for Tottenham Hotspur attacker Lucas Moura.
Newcastle United are exploring the possibility of bringing Tottenham Hotspur’s Lucas Moura to St. James’ Park. That is according to a fresh report from Football Insider, which claims the Magpies have made a late move to secure a loan deal for the 30-year-old Brazilian attacker.
Newcastle fell to a painful 2-1 last-minute defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday night. But the good thing is that they have a home game against Crystal Palace just around the corner to show a response. In the meantime, there is the small matter of transfer deadline day. And while the Magpies may not be too busy, Eddie Howe is still keen to add a new midfielder and another attacker, if possible.
Daily Telegraph has just reported that Newcastle failed with a fresh approach for Brazilian prospect Joao Pedro, with Watford reluctant to sell their star striker so close to the deadline, forcing the Magpies to look elsewhere. Now, Football Insider is claiming that Newcastle have set their sights on Tottenham attacker, Lucas Moura.
The former PSG winger is yet to start for Antonio Conte’s side this season and has only featured off the bench for a total of 12 minutes in their opening two games. The Brazilian international has an issue with tendonitis that has restricted his availability this season, but that has not stopped rumours from flying about.
The 30-year-old has slipped further down the pecking order under Conte this summer, with the recent arrivals of Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison reducing his game time. Moura has been directly involved in 65 goals in 204 appearances for Tottenham since arriving from PSG in a £25.5 million deal in January 2018, including six goals and eight assists in all competitions last season.
Needless to say, Moura’s top-level experience could come in handy for a lot of clubs in the Premier League. Aston Villa, for one, have been linked with a move for the Brazilian international in recent days, and Football Insider have now claimed Newcastle have made a “deadline-busting move” to get Moura on a season-long loan, with the player open to a move to Tyneside, where he will join the Brazilian contingent of Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes.
While Moura has lost a yard of pace over the past couple of years, he still has that attacking flair and versatility to play anywhere across the frontline. The Tottenham attacker is still a very serviceable player and can often pose problems for the opposition defence with his nifty footwork. So, it is easy to see why Newcastle chiefs might be attracted to this move, as he could prove to be a perfect stop-gap solution.
