La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are reportedly close to signing Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon on loan without a purchase option.

According to Football Insider, La Liga heavyweights Atletico Madrid are closing in on the capture of Spanish left-back Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham Hotspur after agreeing a straight season-long loan deal with the Premier League outfit, with the 25-year-old keen on returning to Madrid this summer.

Reguilon joined Tottenham from Real Madrid in the summer of 2020 for a fee of around £27 million and was so highly rated that Los Blancos insisted on including a buy-back clause in his Tottenham sale. He looked to be a steal of a signing as he started his Tottenham career brightly and was also a fans favourite for his bombing forward runs and commitment.

However, the Spanish international has fallen out of favour following the arrival of Antonio Conte, and a drop in confidence meant he has lost his form. The 25-year-old has appeared less suited to Conte’s wing-back system and was notably wasteful with his final ball in his appearances last term. To date, the Spanish defender has made 67 appearances for Tottenham across all competitions, scoring two goals in the process.

Following the arrival of Ivan Perisic this summer, he has fallen further down the pecking order at Tottenham and was excluded from their pre-season tour to South Korea. Conte also had Reguilon training away from the Tottenham first team this summer and told him to find a new club.

As such, a host of clubs across Europe queued up to sign the Tottenham defender, including Lazio, Napoli, Atalanta, Juventus, Fulham, Sevilla, and Nottingham Forest. However, Atletico Madrid made a concrete move to snap up the Tottenham left-back, who has now agreed to a loan switch to Wanda Metropolitano.

Atletico have agreed to take Reguilon on a season-long loan without a purchase option, with the player now set for a medical ahead of a return to La Liga. Yannick Carrasco has been the regular option at left wing-back over the previous two seasons for Diego Simeone, and Reguilon will provide cover for the Rojiblancos, who are bound to lose Renan Lodi to Nottingham Forest.

Forest have been active in the transfer market for a left-back to cover for their injured summer signing Omar Richards. And while they also considered signing Reguilon, the 25-year-old was unconvinced of a move to the City Ground and wanted to return to La Liga. They now look set to sign Lodi on an initial loan deal in a transfer domino effect.

Tottenham are concentrating their efforts this summer on trying to offload players who head coach Antonio Conte deems surplus to requirements after effectively reinforcing the squad with six new senior arrivals. Harry Winks is believed to be on the verge of a similar move to Sampdoria after initially holding out for Premier League interest.
