Aston Villa look set to land Southampton star Jan Bednarek with the transfer deal agreed in principle.

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa have agreed in principle to sign Southampton centre-back Jan Bednarek this summer.

Steven Gerrard’s side have had an excellent summer transfer window and have already brought in one defender in Diego Carlos. The Brazilian does not appear to have made the Villans any solid in defence given that they have picked up just one win from three games.

Carlos’s injury has now raised the need for a replacement, and Bednarek appears to be that man. The Polish international is a proven quantity in the Premier League and will bring with him much experience. It could be the shot in the arm Gerrard and co need to turn their fortunes around.

The 26-year-old has been subjected to a loan-to-buy offer, and as things stand, talks appear to be progressing smoothly. With a deal in principle agreed, the onus will now be to get the final details sorted in the coming days. With under a week to go before the transfer window shuts, Bednarek could prove to be Villa’s acquisition this summer.

All parties appear keen for the deal to go through, and this augurs well for Villa. The Midlands side were dealt a cruel blow given that Carlos will now miss the rest of the season after injuring his Achilles tendon. With Kortney Hause also sent out on loan to Watford, Villa are left with Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings in central defence.

Neither player inspires confidence, and bringing in Bednarek is more of a priority than a luxury. Having him on loan is a low-risk move that could pay off massively in the months to come. Strong on the ball and good in the air, the Polish ace has all the skills in the book needed to thrive in Gerrard’s system.

The Liverpool legend needs his side to start clicking soon, and unless that happens, serious questions might get raised regarding his ability as a manager. Having a strong defence gives him the base to build something special, and given the circumstances, Bednarek could be a shrewd addition.
