Aston Villa could be looking at West Ham United defender Craig Dawson as a late signing to offset the loss of Diego Carlos to injury.

According to The Sun, Aston Villa are considering a late move for West Ham United defender Craig Dawson, as Steven Gerrard seeks a solution that offsets the loss of Diego Carlos to injury.

Aston Villa may have had a reasonable transfer window, but that has not reflected on their season thus far. Steven Gerrard has steered the team to just three points so far in as many games, which has caused concerns in their fanbase.

Moreover, Aston Villa have not shown signs of gelling well together, while Gerrard has had a feud with Tyrone Mings at the start of the season. After stripping the England international of the captaincy and dropping him, Mings has regained his place in the team in the last two games.

The big news in the last weeks has been the severe injury suffered by Diego Carlos. The Brazilian defender arrived from Sevilla in a big move but sustained a problem against Everton that is set to keep him out for much of the remainder of the season.

Aston Villa are now left with the same central defensive setup as last season, although Kortney Hause has since departed on loan. Carlos was the defender that was brought in for his aggressive nature, as Gerrard thought he would bring a bite to his backline.

His injury has dealt Aston Villa a huge blow, as the manager may dip back into the market for a late acquisition. Arsenal’s Rob Holding was linked with a move, but Mikel Arteta is unlikely to allow the defender to depart at this window stage.

Craig Dawson has now emerged on their shortlist, with the West Ham United defender reportedly unhappy with life at the London Stadium. David Moyes considers the 32-year-old important for his plans this season but may have to deal with the current situation.

The Hammers let go of Issa Diop, while Angelo Ogbonna is steadily coming back to fitness. Moreover, West Ham added Nayef Aguerd early in the summer, while Thilo Kehrer also arrived from PSG recently. Dawson feels he may not get ample game time at West Ham this season, which has prompted him to consider his options.

Aston Villa are prepared to offer him regular football and a two-year deal to tempt him to sign for the club. It remains to be seen if West Ham will allow such a sale to materialise, considering Aguerd will spend time on the sidelines through an injury sustained in pre-season.

Incidentally, Aston Villa and West Ham have met on Sunday in the Premier League, with the two managers looking for a reprieve from the current pressure they are enduring.
