Manchester United in talks to sign Tom Huddlestone

Manchester United are reportedly in talks with former Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone over a summer move to their under-21 team.

According to a report by Daily Telegraph, Manchester United have made a surprise approach for free agent midfielder Tom Huddlestone, who has represented the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Hull City in the past. The Red Devils are planning to offer the 35-year-old English veteran a player-coach role for their under-21 side.

Tom Huddlestone is currently without a club after his contract with Hull City expired this summer. The EFL Championship club had signed him on a one-year deal last summer, and he made 12 appearances for them across all competitions in the 2021/22 season. This was Huddlestone’s second stint with Hull City, after having played for them for four years between 2013 and 2017.

A Derby County youth product, Huddlestone was signed by Tottenham Hotspur in 2005, and he represented them for eight years before joining Hull City. For Spurs, the 35-year-old midfielder played 207 matches, scoring 16 times and assisting 31 goals.

The former England international returned to Derby County after his spell with Hull City and represented them for three seasons before he again moved to Hull City last year. The veteran midfielder now looks set to be on his way to Manchester United as a player-coach for their under-21 side.

Paul McShane, who captained the Manchester United Under-23 side before Huddlestone, has retired from playing, leaving the position vacant. With the Under-23 set-up now changing to Under-21, the Red Devils have approached the former Tottenham man to fill up the spot.

The English midfielder is believed to be keen on assuming a coaching role, leaving Manchester United in a good position to complete the transfer. With almost 20 years of experience in English football across various levels, Huddlestone has a lot to pass on to the youngsters at Manchester United, and this could be a move that would benefit all parties involved.

Huddlestone has played under Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney at Derby County and alongside current club captain Harry Maguire at Hull. It will be interesting how the 35-year-old English midfielder goes about the latest phase of his career.
