Villarreal edge closer to landing Giovani Lo Celso

Aston Villa have ended their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur star Giovani Lo Celso.

La Liga giants Villarreal are reportedly close to signing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso permanently.

According to Spanish journalist Xavi Jorquera Marquez, La Liga giants Villarreal have taken a step closer to signing Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Giovani Lo Celso on a permanent basis. The Argentina international spent the second half of last season on loan with the Yellow Submarine, and could now join them on a permanent deal.

Giovani Lo Celso joined Tottenham Hotspur in the 2019 summer transfer window from Real Betis on an initial loan deal, which was made permanent a year later. However, the 26-year-old has not been able to cement a starting spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and was loaned out to La Liga club Villarreal in the 2022 January transfer window.

With the Yellow Submarine, the Argentine playmaker reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Villarreal boss Unai Emery mainly used Lo Celso as a second striker or attacking midfielder, and the Tottenham midfielder could resume a similar role if he seals a return to Estadio de la Ceramico.

Lo Celso has now returned to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but does not feature in Antonio Conte’s plans going forward, and the north London club are looking to offload him this summer. As per Xavi Jorquera Marquez, Villarreal have made significant progress in their pursuit of the midfielder.

The Spanish club have come out confident from their discussions with the north London club, who value Lo Celso at €20 million. Villarreal reportedly have been in talks with Tottenham since last month, and a final discussion on his future could be taken soon.

Along with Lo Celso, the Yellow Submarine are also showing interest in Tanguy Ndombele, and the Frenchman was a part of discussions between the two clubs as well.

Villarreal left-back Pervis Estupinan could be part of an exchange deal which would see Ndombele move to Spain, and the two clubs are currently assessing their options. A discussion on the two transfer deals can be expected soon as we near the start of the league season, with Tottenham closing in on getting rid of two unwanted players.
