DC United boss and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney is seeking a summer move for the Red Devils’ defender Phil Jones this summer.
According to The Sun, DC United manager and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney is keen to reunite with former teammate and the Red Devils’ Phil Jones at the MLS club this summer.
The 36-year-old might be old enough to be a veteran player but has gone on to make a name for himself as a budding manager. Rooney was thrust into a no-win situation at Derby County and has now taken his talents across the Atlantic to the MLS.
Rooney is already at work at DC United and is eyeing the summer transfer window for potential recruitments. Phil Jones, a largely out of favour defender at Manchester United, is in his sights.
Jones, at 30, is a veteran of the game and is one of the last few players from the Sir Alex Ferguson era still at the Theatre of Drums. Injuries and inconsistency have largely seen him fall from grace, and is currently nowhere near the starting XI at Manchester United.
Rooney is keen to bring in players with a point to prove. Jones is one such player and has it in him to prove his doubters wrong. The Englishman still has plenty of football left in him, and a new challenge away from Old Trafford could do him good.
The DC United manager is a long-term admirer of Jones. He scouted the Manchester United defender while at Pride Park and would welcome the opportunity to finally land his man. Erik ten Hag’s arrival has prompted an overhaul of sorts, and the 30-year-old could be one of the names to depart Old Trafford.
Manchester United already have several players on their centre-back roster ahead of Jones in the pecking order. Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly form the crux of ten Hag’s defensive options. The arrival of Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez makes Jones more or less the club’s sixth-choice central defender.
Unlike at Manchester United, Jones has a good chance of playing regularly in the MLS. While the American league might not be as glamorous as the English top-flight, it can act as a catalyst for the 30-year-old to rekindle his career, especially while playing under the tutelage of a familiar name in Rooney.
