Fulham are reportedly interested in securing the services of former PSG and Tottenham defender Serge Aurier on a free transfer this summer.
According to French journalist Loic Tanzi, Serge Aurier could be gearing up for a return to the Premier League as newly-promoted club Fulham are showing concrete interest in signing him.
Aurier spent four years in England as he endured a topsy-turvy tenure with Tottenham Hotspur. Having joined from PSG in 2017, the 29-year-old made 110 appearances for the north London outfit and managed to score eight and assist 17 goals. Considered a defensive liability for the majority of his stint with Spurs, the right-back was released last year by the club.
Aurier signed with La Liga side Villarreal in October 2021, signing a short-term contract. While he made 23 appearances for Unai Emery’s side, the Ivory Coast international failed to convince the last season’s UEFA Champions League semi-finalists to keep hold of him beyond the 2021/22 campaign.
Aurier’s contract with Villarreal ran down on June 30, and he is back in the free agent pool this summer. And there seems to be no shortage of suitors for the 29-year-old right-back as Atletico Madrid and Galatasaray have shown an interest. Now, Fulham, too, have entered the picture to try and lure Aurier back to London.
Back in the Premier League, Fulham are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to strengthen their roster and build a team that can maintain their top-flight status. Marco Silva has already secured the signings of Joao Palhinha and Andreas Pereira to fortify his options in midfield.
The Portuguese tactician is now targeting the signing of a new right-back to compete with Kenny Tete in the position. A move for former Newcastle United star Kevin Mbabu is reportedly in the works. But there remain uncertainties over a transfer as the Switzerland international is said to be waiting for better options.
So, Fulham are also keeping their options open and have identified Aurier as a possible target. The 29-year-old has an abundance of experience at the highest level and would cost nothing in transfer fees, making him an appealing target for the Cottagers. However, with a club like Atletico Madrid, who can offer European football, interested, Fulham will have their task cut out to sign Aurier.
