Newcastle United have contacted Everton about the possibility of signing Anthony Gordon this summer.

According to Daily Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath, Newcastle United are exploring a summer move for Anthony Gordon. The Everton youngster has emerged as a much sought-after prospect in the market following his breakthrough last season. Newcastle have already contacted his parent club over a move, though the decision is solely up to Everton, on whether or not they are open to selling the youngster.

A left-winger by trade, Gordon is widely regarded as one of the most gifted players to come out of the Everton youth academy in recent years. He featured in as many as 35 league matches last term, with his six-goal involvements and overall creativity in the final third playing a vital role in helping his club avoid relegation.

But after a difficult campaign at the Goodison Park, a move away from Merseyside could be in the offing for young Gordon. The 21-year-old has already emerged as a target for Tottenham Hotspur, and it appears Newcastle United, too, have joined the race.

Fresh from the capture of Sven Botman, the Magpies are looking to shore up their options in the attacking department. Eddie Howe’s men looked rather impressive during the second half of last season, with Ryan Fraser, in particular, rekindling his form under the leadership of his former manager at Bournemouth.

However, there is a dearth of reliable alternatives in the creative unit, with the team often appearing overly reliant on the services of Allan Saint-Maximin. That is where Anthony Gordon should prove to be useful, as the youngster is capable of offering the creative essence and is versatile enough to operate anywhere in the final third.

It should make him an asset for Eddie Howe, who also has a solid track record of nurturing young English players. To that end, Newcastle United have contacted Everton over a potential £35 million move for Gordon this summer.

That said, luring him away from Goodison Park could be a challenge, especially following Richarlison’s move to Tottenham which has left a massive void in Everton’s attacking ranks.

As such, Frank Lampard will be determined to keep hold of the young Everton ace and build the attack around him next season. The Toffees are already looking for additional reinforcements by targeting Chelsea starlet Armando Broja, so it will be interesting to see how the Merseysiders go about their business in the coming weeks.
