Nelson Semedo is set to leave Wolves in the summer, with Chelsea among the clubs interested in his services.

According to Fichajes, Wolverhampton Wanderers are on the verge of losing Nelson Semedo. The Premier League outfit are bracing themselves for the departure of the former Barcelona right-back, who appears to have no shortage of suitors.

While the report revolves around the interest from Atletico Madrid, Chelsea are another club keeping close tabs on his situation. They could make a move and seize the opportunity to sign the right-back on a cut-price deal ahead of the new season. However, the competition should be fierce from both Juventus and Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea’s interest in Nelson Semedo comes in the midst of rumours swirling around the future of Cesar Azpilicueta. The versatile right-back has been linked with a move to Barcelona, and even though Chelsea are not willing to let him go for cheap, they are preparing for his potential move to Camp Nou.

Azpilicueta’s departure should leave Thomas Tuchel with Reece James as the only reliable option at right wing-back. It has accentuated the need for a new face in the position, with Nelson Semedo emerging as an option for coach Tuchel.

Formerly of Barcelona, Semedo joined Wolves in the summer of 2020, putting an end to his dreadful spell in Catalonia. Since arriving in England, he has become a pivotal player for Wolves, notably racking up 63 competitive appearances for the Midlands outfit.

However, there is a general feeling around the club that Semedo is not performing to his full potential just yet and would be better suited to another club. That is where Chelsea come into the fray. Although the Blues have been linked with a move for French international Jonathan Clauss, Tuchel may favour the top-level experience Semedo brings to the table.

The Portuguese international has indeed featured in a combined total of almost 150 appearances in the English and Spanish top flight. He has won 24 caps for his country as well, making the 28-year-old a decorated player, whose pedigree at the highest level of football should make him a competent alternative for Reece James next season.

Chelsea, though, must be aware of the interest from Atletico Madrid. The Spanish giants can offer Semedo more game-time, having lost Kieran Trippier in January.
