Celta Vigo enter race for Real Madrid star Borja Mayoral

Real Madrid striker Borja Mayoral reportedly has a new suitor, as Celta Vigo have entered the race to sign the 25-year-old star.

According to Defensa Central, Celta Vigo are the latest club to show an interest in signing Real Madrid striker Borja Mayoral in the summer transfer window.

A product of Real Madrid’s youth setup, Mayoral made his first-team debut for Los Blancos in 2015 and has featured 33 times, scoring seven goals. However, the 25-year-old has spent the majority of his senior career away on loan, having had stints at VfL Wolfsburg, Levante, AS Roma and Getafe.

Mayoral left Real Madrid for Roma in 2020, joining the Giallorossi on a two-year loan. The striker enjoyed a prolific first year in the Italian capital but saw his game-time reduce after Jose Mourinho’s appointment last summer. Having played sparsely in the first half of the 2021/22 campaign, the striker left Roma to join Getafe on loan for the second half of the season.

Mayoral made a solid impression back in Spain, finishing with six goals and an assist from 18 matches for Getafe. Now back at Real Madrid, the 25-year-old Spaniard finds himself at a crossroads in his career.

Real Madrid are open to keeping him at the Santiago Bernabeu as the backup for Karim Benzema, considering that both Luka Jovic and Mariano Diaz are likely to be sold. However, given the form that Benzema has showcased, Mayoral is likely to find regular game-time hard to come by under Carlo Ancelotti.

So, an exit in the summer remains a strong possibility for the Spaniard, with Getafe keen on re-signing him as manager Quique Sanches Flores pushes for the transfer. And now, Celta Vigo have also joined the race to sign the 25-year-old Mayoral this summer.

Celta Vigo are in the market for an attacking addition as a replacement for Santi Mina, who has been handed a prison sentence for sexual assault charges. And the Galician outfit have identified Borja Mayoral as a possible target for the summer, although signing him might not be as easy.

Reports have indicated that Mayoral could be open to staying at Real Madrid. If he decides against that, a move to Getafe could be the preferred option for the 25-year-old after he enjoyed a fairly impressive spell with the Azulones.
