Manchester United prepared to walk away from Frenkie de Jong deal

Manchester United are reportedly ready to walk away from the deal to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong due to his €100 million price tag.

According to Spanish publication SPORT, Manchester United have ‘threatened’ to walk away from their pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong if a suitable agreement for all parties is not reached. The Red Devils are not willing to pay €100 million that Barcelona are currently holding out for to sell the Dutchman.

Barcelona have been forced to sell some of their first-team players to make space for new signings in the squad and be able to balance their wage bill. Frenkie de Jong is one player who seems to be closing in on an exit, with Manchester United hot on his heels.

The Red Devils have not hidden their interest in the Dutch midfielder, with new manager Erik ten Hag coaching him before at Ajax. But Manchester United are adamant to sign the player for a reasonable price and are prepared to look for other options if Barcelona demand more, which is reportedly stalling the deal.

As per SPORT, Manchester United have prepared an offer worth €70 million plus €10 million in add-ons, which they believe is a fair offer for the Barcelona midfielder. However, the Blaugrana are holding out for more, which has forced the Premier League giants to think of pulling the plug on the deal.

De Jong is reportedly open to joining Manchester United, with ten Hag, giving him a lowdown on his project at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are hopeful that personal terms could be quickly agreed upon with the Barcelona midfielder, as they are offering him improved wages from what he has been earning with the Catalan giants.

Barcelona could end up agreeing to a fee close to €80 million plus variables, but they do not want many add-ons to be included in the English club’s offer. Barcelona are reportedly eager to get the deal over the line quickly to invest the money earned from de Jong’s sale to get the likes of Robert Lewandowski on board.

The Catalan giants are also in the market for Sergio Busquets’s replacement and a world-class centre-back. But it will all come to nought if Barcelona remain stuck on their €100 million asking price, forcing Manchester United to walk away from the deal.
