Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi has reportedly emerged as one of the targets for Tottenham this summer.
A recent report from football.london has offered an update on Tottenham’s transfer policy in the summer transfer window. It appears coach Antonio Conte is determined to improve his ranks in the defensive line, with Spurs’ manager targeting at least two new centre-backs.
Tottenham have been linked with a move for a variety of defenders, including Alessandro Bastoni. But the Lilywhites are also keeping tabs on a few homegrown talents such as Marc Guehi. The Crystal Palace starlet was one of the rising stars in the Premier League this past season and has emerged as one of the potential targets for Spurs.
Ever since the appointment of Patrick Vieira, Crystal Palace have turned out to be the breeding ground for several young players, with the likes of Conor Gallagher, Eberechi Eze, Michael Olise and Tyrick Mitchell all enjoying life under the former Arsenal superstar.
Marc Guehi has been one such player who has enjoyed immense success since joining the club last summer from Chelsea. A centre-back by trade, the former Chelsea starlet built a formidable partnership alongside Joachim Andersen, helping Palace finish 12th in the league table.
Guehi’s aggression and combative qualities in defence, coupled with his dogged defensive mentality had even alerted his former club Chelsea. However, the Blues are set to face stiff competition from Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign the Englishman, who earned his maiden call-up for his country in March.
After sneaking into the top four under Antonio Conte this past season, Spurs are looking to enhance their options at the back. Tottenham have primarily targeted Bastoni as well as other Inter Milan defenders such as Milan Skriniar and Stefan de Vrij, but coach Conte could fancy signing someone like Guehi.
The 21-year-old is a homegrown star who has shown immense physical and aerial prowess. His aggressive style of play makes him an ideal fit for the Premier League and the former Chelsea defender could prove to be an excellent defensive partner for the more technically astute Cristian Romero next season at Tottenham.
Luring Guehi from Crystal Palace, though, could be a tricky ask for Tottenham. The Eagles had signed the defender for a fortune last summer and will be apprehensive about offloading him this summer. Even if they do opt to cash in on Guehi, they are expected to demand a fortune for his services, which effectively ruled out a Spurs move for the young defender.
