Liverpool are reportedly keeping close tabs on the progress of Saint-Etienne defender Saidou Sow.
According to a report from L’Equipe, Liverpool scouts were in attendance during Egypt’s encounter against Guinea in Cairo. They were keeping tabs on the progress of Saidou Sow, who is starting to garner some attention during the international break after a disappointing end to the 2021/22 campaign.
A member of the ASSE academy since 2016, Sow had been on the fringes of the first team for a couple of years now. He is mainly considered as a young player with potential but he has never been able to make a proper breakthrough and establish himself as a first-team regular for the Greens.
The centre-back was barely used by Pascal Dupraz during the second half of the 2021/22 campaign. But with the season coming to an end, the defender is using the international break to gain some much-needed game-time with the Guinean national team.
A teammate of Liverpool star Naby Keita in the Guinean team, Sow’s impressive performances on the international stage have put the Merseysiders on red alert. The defender has managed to impress the Liverpool scouts, and a summer move to England could be in the offing.
Standing at 1.85m, Sow has an imposing frame that gives him a considerable advantage in physical and aerial duels. He is athletic enough to thrive in the Premier League as well and despite his lack of action at ASSE, the 19-year-old certainly has what it takes to make a name for himself at the highest level of football.
From a sporting perspective, the Guinean can serve as a direct replacement for Ben Davies. The former Preston North End starlet is expected to leave Anfield in the summer even after a rather successful loan spell at Sheffield United.
The Reds are also expected to offload Nathaniel Phillips, thus opening up the opportunity for someone like Sow to become a key backup option in the team.
Acquiring the services of the teenager is not going to be difficult either as ASSE are actively looking for a way to offload the defender in the coming summer. It paves the way for Liverpool to make an opening offer for the defender and secure his services ahead of the new season, as part of their defensive reinforcements.
