Leeds United are plotting a move for Gonzalo Plata, although it would depend upon Real Valladolid’s ability to sign him permanently from Sporting CP.
According to Correio da Manha, via Sport Witness, Leeds United are interested in a move for Gonzalo Plata. The winger spent the season on loan at Real Valladolid, who are not prepared to pay parent club Sporting CP’s €10 million asking price, which could open the doors for Jesse Marsch’s side.
Leeds United are not taking things lightly after narrowly escaping relegation last season. The Whites endured a difficult season with injuries to key players and a terrible loss of form, although they were fortunate enough to remain in the Premier League.
Manager Marsch has to manoeuvre the transfer market expertly and get players who will strengthen the team for next season. The Yorkshire club have already signed Brenden Aaronson from Red Bull Salzburg as the manager looks to address key issues in the squad.
Leeds are also closing in on the signing of Salzburg star Rasmus Kristensen, as they seem to be in a hurry to get deals over the line early. The Whites are now looking at recruiting attacking talents.
Sporting CP winger Gonzalo Plata has emerged as a target for Leeds United, who are keeping close tabs on his situation. The Ecuador star spent the last season on loan with Spanish second division club Real Valladolid, who are not in a position to pay his asking price.
Valladolid had the option to secure him permanently for €10 million, although their financial situation is not strong enough to pay up. They have reportedly presented a counter-offer worth €7 million, which Sporting may not accept. Plata has a contract until 2023, and the Portuguese side only holds 50% of his rights.
Sporting are hoping to make at least €5 million from the sale and are adamant about their asking price. This has alerted Leeds United and Real Betis to jump on the opportunity and sign the winger.
Leeds United could be looking at Plata as a possible replacement for Raphinha, who could depart the club for Barcelona. While the 21-year-old Ecuador star has not proven his worth to replace the Brazilian, he could develop under the tutelage of Marsch, who is known to get the best out of young talents.
Whether he wants to leave Spain is an entirely different question, as Betis have an eye for him. However, Plata might be get an opportunity to play top-flight football in England, as Sporting’s asking price is modest and within Leeds’ reach.
