Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic is reportedly set to undergo a medical with AS Roma as he closes in on a reunion with Jose Mourinho.
According to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United’s Nemanja Matic is set to appear for a medical with AS Roma next month. The former Chelsea midfielder’s contract with the Red Devils runs down this month, and he can join any club on a free transfer.
Matic’s five-year association with Manchester United is now coming to an end. The former Serbian international moved to Manchester from Chelsea in 2017, signed by his former manager Joe Mourinho.
Matic went on to make 189 appearances for the club, scoring four times and assisting 11 goals. But he failed to win a silverware at Manchester United as his time with them coincided with some of their most underwhelming seasons in the Premier League era. He confirmed his exit through an Instagram post in April earlier this year.
The Red Devils are now set to begin a new era under manager Erik ten Hag, who could oversee a massive clear-out before going about his rebuilding business. A host of players including Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard seem to be on their way out of Manchester United with Matic. The likes of Anthony Martial, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly have linked with exits as well.
Matic, even after leaving Manchester United, seems to be heading to work with a familiar face. Jose Mourinho signed the midfielder at Chelsea before getting him on board at Manchester United. Roma now reportedly seem to be the third club where the duo will work together.
As per Romano, while a medical has been scheduled for next month, a ‘full agreement’ has been reached between Manchester United and the Giallorossi, with Matic signing a one-year deal. The Serie A giants will also hold the option of extending the deal by another year.
