Aston Villa are on the verge of securing the services of Rangers whizkid Rory Wilson this summer.
According to The Athletic, Aston Villa are closing in on the capture of Rory Wilson. The Rangers youngster had been one of the top targets for Steven Gerrard this year and it appears the move could soon be made official, as the Premier League outfit continue their activity heading into the summer transfer window.
Fresh from the capture of Diego Carlos, along with other star players such as Philippe Coutinho, Boubacar Kamara and Robin Olsen, the name of Rory Wilson may pale in comparison.
The youngster, after all, is merely a 16-year-old forward, who plies his trade with the Rangers’ Under-18 setup. He is regarded as one of the most talented players to come out of the club’s youth academy in recent years and having coached the Scottish giants in the past, Villa coach Gerrard is well aware of his abilities.
Aston Villa had been targeting Wilson since the end of March. They were linked with him once again in May, with Gerrard’s beloved Liverpool also keen on his services. But it appears Villa have won the race and the youngster could complete his move to Villa Park in the coming weeks, reports The Athletic.
A centre-forward by trade, Wilson is described as a clinical goalscorer. The 16-year-old prodigy has raised many eyebrows with his performances in the youth leagues of Scotland and even in the UEFA Youth League. He has represented Scotland’s youth team as well, boasting a stunning record of eight goals in 11 matches for the Under-17s.
Buoyed by his performances in the youth levels, Steven Gerrard will be delighted to have secured the services of the Rangers youngster. At just 16, he has a long way to go before he can be considered for the senior side of Aston Villa, but given the way the club have produced talents in the recent past, a breakthrough cannot be ruled out in the near future.
Rangers, for their part, will be disappointed to have lost yet another youth prospect. Wilson might not be the only Rangers player moving to Aston Villa this summer either, with the Villans also reportedly closing on the capture of Calvin Bassey.
