West Ham United join race to sign Junior Adamu

Premier League side West Ham United have reportedly joined the race to sign Red Bull Salzburg forward Junior Adamu.

According to a report by Daily Mail, West Ham United are ready to challenge Southampton and Brighton & Hove Albion for the signing of Red Bull Salzburg striker Junior Adamu. The 20-year-old Austrian international is attracting interest from clubs around Europe with Ajax, Hertha Berlin and Red Bull Leipzig all said to be keeping tabs.

Adamu was signed by Salzburg in the 2020 summer transfer window but only gained promotion to the club’s first team this season. The 20-year-old hit the ground running immediately, scoring nine times and assisting five goals in 43 matches. Though he featured as a centre-forward throughout the 2021/22 season, he can play on the wings as well.

Even though the 20-year-old still has over three years remaining on his contract with Salzburg, the Austrian giants could sell him for a fee of around £12 million, which the interested Premier League sides would not find to be prohibitive.

West Ham United are searching for a striker this summer and have been linked with the likes of Giovanni Simeone and Emmanuel Dennis, among others. Meanwhile, Jesse Lingard looks set to leave Manchester United this summer and could prefer a move to the London Stadium, having spent six successful months there in the second half of the 2020/21 season.

The Hammers currently have just Michail Antonio as their only recognised striker and thus, signing another centre-forward makes sense as they wish to continue to challenge for European spots in the 2022/23 season.

West Ham United finished seventh in the Premier League this season to book a spot in next season’s UEFA Europa Conference League.

While Adamu could turn out to be a decent signing, especially as he has the space and time to further improve his game at 20 years of age, West Ham will have to ward off competition from multiple clubs. Other than the aforementioned sides, Leicester City are also said to be showing interest in Adamu, whose next move could decide the trajectory of his career, making it a crucial call.
