Newcastle United are reportedly ready to pounce at the opportunity to sign Tottenham defender Cameron Carter-Vickers, who is currently on loan at Celtic.
According to a report from SBI Soccer, Newcastle United are closely monitoring the situation of Cameron Carter-Vickers. The Tottenham defender has enjoyed a bright spell on loan at Celtic this season, and although he is set to return to north London in the summer, Celtic have the option to make the move permanent by triggering a clause worth €7 million.
While the Scottish giants are poised to exercise the option, Newcastle United are keeping close tabs on the situation. The Magpies will be ready to pounce if Celtic find difficulties in meeting the €7 million valuation, which could increase up to €11.6 million thanks to several performance-related add-ons.
A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Carter-Vickers has been extremely unlucky in regards to his lack of first-team opportunities for Spurs. During his time in north London, he has had to spend countless loan spells at clubs such as Sheffield United, Swansea, Stoke City and Bournemouth, in search of a breakthrough.
The defender joined Celtic on loan from Tottenham last summer, hoping to try his luck in foreign leagues having struggled to impress in the Premier League or in the Championship. And it seems it was a wise decision by the American, who has become a defensive lynchpin for Celtic this season, following the summer exit of Kristoffer Ajer.
With 43 appearances in all competitions this term, Carter-Vickers has made a solid impression with his impressive work ethic. Standing at 1.83m, the 24-year-old is quite competent in physical and aerial duels as well and his defensive contributions have been critical in helping Celtic remain on course to reclaim the Scottish Premiership title.
Carter-Vickers’s performances have not gone unnoticed either, with Newcastle United prepared to make him a part of the club’s massive overhaul this summer. Although the Magpies have primarily targeted young talents such as Sven Botman, it appears they rate Carter-Vickers highly due to his athleticism and experience in English football.
Tottenham, for their part, are unlikely to keep hold of the American international, even though the Lilywhites are expected to offload several key defenders this summer, including Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon.

Regardless, a prolonged stay at Celtic instead of joining Newcastle remains the most likely outcome for Carter-Vickers, who would hope to continue his development in Scotland and become a part of the USMNT setup for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
