Premier League side Everton are reportedly keen on signing 29-year-old Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Conor Coady.
As per reports in TEAMtalk, Conor Coady has emerged as a potential summer target for Everton, who are looking to add defensive reinforcements after the ongoing season. The Toffees are currently flirting with relegation and are just three points off the drop zone. Should they survive, the Merseyside club could move in for the 29-year-old English international.
Everton have struggled defensively this season. Only four teams in the Premier League have conceded more goals than their 49. Their problems were further compounded when Michael Keane was sent off in their last Premier League game – a 1-0 defeat to West Ham United. This leaves them short-handed for the upcoming clash against Burnley, which could go a long way in deciding their future in the league.
On the other hand, Coady has been a mainstay in Wolves’ defence since joining them from Huddersfield Town in the summer of 2015. The Liverpool youth academy product could not break into the Reds’ first team and was shipped out to Huddersfield in 2014. After just a season with them, the 29-year-old was snapped up by Wolves.
Coady immediately slotted into the heart of Wolves’ defence, helping them eventually get promoted to the Premier League in 2018. The centre-back has made 310 appearances for the club, scoring six and assisting seven goals as well.
Everton currently have Michael Keane, Ben Godfrey, Yerry Mina, Mason Holgate, and Jarrad Branthwaite as their centre-backs. They are desperate to add reinforcements across the pitch this summer. But a move for Coady might not be as straightforward as they would hope, even if they survive the drop.
After the ongoing season, the 29-year-old English international, also linked with Tottenham Hotspur previously, will still have three years remaining on his contract, meaning he won’t come in cheap. Moreover, he is still a Liverpool fan, which could play against Everton if they do approach Wolves with an offer.
Additionally, Wolves have been in and around the European spots in the Premier League recently, whereas Everton are currently in a relegation battle. Thus, it seems unlikely that the English centre-back would be persuaded to join Everton.
