Manchester United are set to rival Inter Milan in the pursuit of Sergio Gomez, who could leave RSC Anderlecht in the summer.
According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, as relayed by Sport Witness, Sergio Gomez is seemingly becoming one of the most in-demand players across Europe. The RSC Anderlecht starlet has been making waves in Belgium and could spark a bidding war between Manchester United and Inter Milan in the summer.
The report suggests both the clubs are keeping close tabs on the Spaniard’s impressive performances in the Belgian top-flight. Inter Milan, in particular, have identified him as a potential long-term replacement for Ivan Perisic. The Croatian veteran could leave the club at the end of the season after turning out to be an impressive servant for the club over the years.
Inter are also eyeing an alternative for Robin Gosens, who is yet to make his presence felt since joining from Atalanta in January. Inter, though, are set to face stiff competition from Manchester United in the pursuit of Gomez.
Formerly of the famed La Masia academy, the young Spaniard has turned his career around following a dire little spell at Borussia Dortmund. Since joining Anderlecht last summer, the 21-year-old has turned himself into a capable left-back and has racked up six goals and 14 assists in just 41 competitive outings.
Gomez’s impressive technical prowess, coupled with his ability to create chances in the final third, has made him an appealing target for Manchester United, who are eyeing alternatives at left-back for the new season.
The Red Devils appear to have taken note of Luke Shaw’s underwhelming performances this term, while Alex Telles is also facing an uncertain future at the club. It has prompted the club to search for a new left-back, and while they have already targeted Scottish talent, Aaron Hickey, Gomez could be an interesting alternative.
The former Dortmund starlet offers more in terms of technical prowess, which could be useful if Manchester United end up appointing Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman is reportedly leading the race to become the next coach for the Red Devils. His style of football heavily revolves around the technical and tactical astuteness of the players.
However, it remains to be seen if Manchester United can beat not only Inter but also another interested party in Leeds United, in the race to sign Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht next season.
