Tottenham rekindle interest in Jonas Hofmann

Tottenham Hotspur have reignited their pursuit of Jonas Hofmann, and a summer move to north London could be on the cards.

According to Sport Bild, as relayed by Sport Witness, Jonas Hofmann is facing an uncertain future at Borussia Monchengladbach. Although the German is not averse to prolonging his stay in the Bundesliga, Gladbach are unlikely to be able to offer him a pay raise, which, coupled with renewed interest from Tottenham Hotspur, could see him depart Borussia Park in the summer.

Hofmann is believed to be aware of the interest from clubs such as Atletico Madrid and Spurs. As such, he could be gunning for an exit after the end of the season, as the midfielder looks to take the next step in his career.

Formerly of Borussia Dortmund, Hofmann has been a major success at Gladbach since joining the club in 2016. During his ongoing six-year spell at the club, he has racked up 175 competitive appearances, scoring 30 goals while bagging 36 assists.

Hofmann had initially begun his career as an explosive winger. However, over the years, he has turned into more of a versatile playmaker who can operate out wide or even in central midfield, if necessary. His productivity has improved significantly, with the player notably being involved in 27 league goals since the start of last season.

A move to Tottenham would represent a much-needed change of scenery for Hofmann, who hopes to become a crucial member of the German national team ahead of the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The move could make even more sense for Tottenham, who have been crying out for some creativity ever since the departure of Christian Eriksen. The club made the bold decision of sanctioning the exit of Dele Alli in January as well, along with three other players who left the club on loan.

It has affected the overall efficacy of Spurs’ creative department. And Hofmann, to that end, could be an excellent fit due to his versatility and creative prowess in the final third. He could prove to be an ideal advanced midfielder in Antonio Conte’s system, as the German’s technical abilities could help him potentially build a solid partnership with Son Heung-min and Harry Kane next season.

Hofmann himself is not the only playmaker targeted by Tottenham, who are reportedly involved in the race to sign Nicolo Zaniolo as well. While the 29-year-old could be the more cost-effective option, Conte may lean towards Zaniolo, having followed him closely during his time at Inter Milan.
