Manchester United are reportedly keeping close tabs on Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski, whose current deal expires in 2023.

Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has offered an update on the future of Robert Lewandowski. It appears the Polish frontman is set for contract talks with FC Bayern as the Bavarians looks to extend his contract that is set to expire at the end of the next season.

Manchester United are keeping close tabs on the situation, however, and are likely to jump in should the situation arise. They have already run an enquiry, seeking the availability of the Bayern forward in the upcoming summer transfer window.

There have been multiple reports in the past suggesting Lewandowski’s desire to leave Bayern. The veteran forward has won almost everything in Bavaria, including the UEFA Champions League and no less than seven Bundesliga titles. He is on course to winning his eighth league title and could even break his own record of scoring 41 goals in a single league campaign.

Lewandowski’s performances have not been restricted to the Bundesliga, with the Pole recently starring in the 7-1 victory over RB Salzburg. He scored three goals inside the game’s first quarter, setting the record for netting the quickest hat-trick in Champions League history. He is only behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the competition’s all-time goalscoring charts as well.

Hence, there is no doubting the fact that Lewandowski is one of the best strikers to ever grace the football pitch. It makes him quite an appealing target for Manchester United, who have developed a reputation for signing established strikers during the final phase of their respective careers.

Over the past eight years, Manchester United have signed the likes of Radamel Falcao, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani and most recently, Cristiano Ronaldo. The addition of Lewandowski, to that end, could be extremely useful, especially amid all the uncertainty surrounding the future of Ronaldo.

Cavani is expected to depart as well, thus accentuating the need for a new striker that can quickly hit the ground running. However, the report from Plettenberg suggests Lewandowski’s move to Old Trafford appears unlikely as the forward is happy at Bayern and is set to hold talks over a contract extension.

While Lewandowski, Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer are likely to be extended, Bayern Munich may face difficulties renewing Serge Gnabry. The German international’s situation has already put north London giants such as Arsenal and Chelsea on red alert, so it will be interesting to see if Manchester United join the race later this summer.
