Manchester United are set to complete the capture of Brighton & Hove whizkid Toby Collyer, who has signed a three and a half year contract.

According to the Secret Scout, Manchester United are set to complete the signing of Toby Collyer. The youngster will be brought in from Brighton & Hove Albion on a three and a half year contract to strengthen the club’s youth academy.

A native of Worthing, Collyer began his career at Brighton and was promoted to the club’s Under-18 setup in the summer of 2020, at the age of only 16. A number six by trade, Collyer is regarded as one of the most talented young midfielders in the country, alongside the likes of Jamaldeen Jimoh, who is a target for league rivals Manchester City and Chelsea.

Manchester United’s interest in a holding midfielder is hardly surprising as the club has faced criticism over the quality of the midfield pairing of Fred and Scott McTominay.

Although the duo has performed considerably well under Ralf Rangnick, they do not have the quality that would help Man United compete with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

With Nemanja Matic already in the final phase of his career, Manchester United do not have plenty of alternatives either. It has heightened the need for midfield reinforcements in the summer, especially with Paul Pogba also likely to leave the club for free amid interest from his former club Juventus.

Manchester United have targeted AS Monaco starlet Aurelien Tchouameni. But it appears coach Rangnick, who is set to take on the role of a consultant for two years after the end of this season, is keen on building a solid base in the youth setup as well, especially given how successful other teams such as Chelsea and Manchester City have been in recent years with their academies.

At the age of 18, Toby Collyer has a long way to go before he can become a first-team regular at Manchester United. But it is worth noting that the club has offered a platform for young players like Marcus Rashford, Brandon Williams, Scott McTominay and Anthony Elanga in recent years, and it would not be surprising to see the Worthing native become an instant hit at Old Trafford.
