Tottenham keeping tabs on Matheus Nunes

SSC Napoli vs US Lecce: Preview and Prediction as the Serie A leaders look to strengthen their hold on the summit.

Tottenham Hotspur are closely monitoring the progress of Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes, who could cost up to €60 million.

According to Record, as relayed by Sport Witness, Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs keeping an eye on Matheus Nunes. The Sporting CP midfielder has been one of the rising stars in the Portuguese top-flight and could be on the verge of a move to the Premier League in the coming summer.

Nunes most recently impressed Pep Guardiola in Sporting’s 5-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League. The positive comments from the Manchester City coach have boosted his profile in England, with Tottenham, for one, one of the prime contenders to snap him up in the summer.

A central midfielder by trade, Nunes got his big break in Liga NOS last season, featuring in 31 league matches. Although far from a regular starter, the youngster’s contributions in the middle of the park helped Sporting famously secure the league title, ahead of traditional heavyweights SL Benfica and FC Porto.

The 23-year-old has become an even more important figure for Sporting in the new season. He has started 20 out of 22 league matches while notably starring in the 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, helping the Lions secure a place in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

Matheus Nunes’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with Tottenham among the clubs keen on securing his services next season. It is apparent that the Londoners are currently in a spot of bother, following back-to-back defeats and are in desperate need of reinforcements, especially in the midfield department.

The Lilywhites did bring in Rodrigo Bentancur in a deadline day move from Juventus. However, Antonio Conte is looking for more urgency from his midfield players, and that is where someone like Matheus Nunes could be a great fit.

Indeed, the 23-year-old has made a solid impression with his work ethic and aggression in the middle of the park. His presence in midfield could significantly strengthen Tottenham’s second line of press, although Spurs have no shortage of alternatives, having also targeted a move for the more experienced figure of Arturo Vidal.

The Chilean’s contract at Inter expires at the end of the season and he could be an attractive option for the club, given his relationship with Conte. However, it will be equally interesting to see what transpires with Nunes’s saga in the coming months.
