Twitter Roundup: Kane the highlight of record-breaking Premier League weekend, Ronaldo stars in El Clasico

An exciting weekend of domestic league action following the international break saw Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo receive plenty of attention on social media for their exploits. Elsewhere, Anthony Martial made history by scoring a landmark goal for Manchester United.

While Harry Kane took over from Gareth Bale as the most prolific scorer for Tottenham Hotspur in a single season, Anthony Martial scored the 1000th Manchester United goal at Old Trafford in the Premier League as former United prodigy Cristiano Ronaldo had a big impact for Real Madrid after scoring the winner at the Nou Camp in Saturday’s El Clasico.

Kane the new hero for Spurs

The last time an attacking player was as prolific in a Tottenham shirt, he went on to become the world’s most expensive player. Gareth Bale may have moved on to Real Madrid, but two seasons later Spurs have a new hero to call their own.

Last season, Harry Kane equalled Bale’s record for most goals scored by a Tottenham player in a Premier League season by scoring 21 goals. This season, he has gone on to better that record. His equalising strike against Liverpool took his season’s tally to 22 goals, the highest by a Spurs player in a single league season. With six games to go, Kane also has the chance to add to that tally.

Anthony Martial makes Old Trafford history

Old Trafford has been one of the most entertaining football grounds for Premier League fans over the years. Ahead of the Red Devils’ clash against Everton, the Theatre of Dreams had seen 999 goals scored by the home team on its hallowed grounds. It was the club’s latest hero Anthony Martial who struck the 1000th goal which proved to be the winner against a strong Everton outfit.

The likes of David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney make up the numbers in the list of club legends that have scored at Old Trafford. Eric Cantona scored the landmark 100th goal and current assistant manager Ryan Giggs’ strike took the tally to 500.

Manchester United fans will be hoping that Anthony Martial, the forward who took the number to four figures, goes on to live up to the legacy of these footballers.

Ronaldo scores in the biggest game of them all

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the decisive goal as Real Madrid finally snapped Barcelona’s 39-game unbeaten streak. The Portuguese winger has often been criticized for not showing up in the big games, but he silenced his critics in style with his exploits on Saturday.

El Clasico itself was an exhilarating affair, with momentum swinging back and forth and the game featuring a red card as well as a disallowed goal. Ronaldo’s late goal was the perfect way for Real Madrid to have their revenge for the 4-0 drubbing they received earlier in the season.
