Noel Whelan believes West Ham United should sign Aaron Ramsey from Juventus, claiming the London club need him the most.
Aaron Ramsey forged a reputation for being a complete midfielder during his time with Arsenal. The Welshman made over 350 appearances with the north London side and left on a free transfer to Juventus after a contract debacle during Unai Emery’s reign.
He signed up with the Serie A club on big wages and a long term deal. However, injuries and a loss of form have blighted his time in Turin. Juventus were open to let him leave on a free transfer last summer, but his salary became a stumbling block for interested clubs.
Ramsey has been used sporadically in the new season, mostly from the bench, as there are signs his time in Italy could end. The Premier League could be the expected destination for the Welshman, and West Ham’s name has popped up.
The Hammers need another box-to-box midfielder despite the presence of Tomas Souchek. Signing a player like Ramsey could allow David Moyes to have another dynamic option from midfield. However, it remains to be seen that they can convince him to lower his wage demands, which are beyond the club’s means at the current rate.
Noel Whelan believes West Ham needs Ramsey more than any other club while still convinced of the Welshman’s qualities. Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan tipped the Hammers to make a move in January for Ramsey.
Whelan said, “I think West Ham probably need him the most. You have to look at where you are right now as a club, and they’re involved in European competition and still in the cup.
“They want to add to the squad and build on where they finished last season because every team is looking for progression with their signings. They were excellent last season, and they’ll want to maintain that form with signings like Ramsey.”
Ramsey knows all about English football, as it’s only been a few years since his departure. There have been links to many other big sides, but as Whelan said, a move to West Ham will make more sense than the others.
