Wenger gives verdict on Arsenal youngsters after 2-0 victory over Reading

Arsenal extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 13 games after dispatching Reading with a 2-0 victory.

The Arsenal manager praised the youngsters, after fielding an inexperienced side, but it was first-team player Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who scored a brace to ensure the Gunners progressed to the quarterfinals for the first time since the 2012/13 season..

In a match that didn’t see too much action, Arsenal eventually made light work of Reading, as the visitors never really threatened Emilio Martinez who started in goal for the Gunners.

Oxlade-Chamberlain gave the hosts the lead on 33 minutes, with a smart finish across the goal to beat former Premier League goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi.

It was all Arsenal in the second half, and although the home side didn’t create too many chances, Oxlade-Chamberlain scored once again to double the lead after a deflected strike left Al-Habsi with no chance.

Speaking after the game, Wenger expressed his satisfaction with the performance from the youngsters.

“I felt Rob did well, Ainsley played some nice passes and Jeff had a good game too,” he said, according to The Daily Star.

Wenger also praised Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has already crossed his tally from last season having scored 5 goals in 12 games this season.

“He has been working really hard in training. That is now showing on the pitch. ”

“His concentration and his focus have improved, he is much sharper and he will continue to do well.”

“(To start games in the Premier League) he needs to keep playing like that.”

Arsenal made nine changes from their 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough in the Premier League on Saturday and Wenger believes that enjoying a good cup run is great for the players that are struggling to break into the first team.
