Michael Carrick has been linked with a return to Manchester United in recent days, and Wayne Rooney has had his say on the matter.
Darren Fletcher is currently the caretaker head coach at Old Trafford, but he is expected to be relieved of his duties this week. Former Middlesbrough manager Carrick is reportedly the front-runner to take over at Manchester United.
Former teammate and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has offered his coaching services to the incoming interim boss. The former England captain is willing to join Carrick in a coaching capacity, and it will be interesting to see if Manchester United are willing to take up the offer.
Speaking on the latest edition of BBC podcast The Wayne Rooney Show, he said, “Whether Michael goes in or if that’s Fletch [Darren Fletcher] or John O’Shea or myself, it needs people who know the football club,” added Rooney, who has recently been on holiday with Carrick and his family in Barbados.
“Roy Keane – I know Roy has had his opinions, I said about Roy going in earlier in the season. Having people who know the club, who care for the club and understand what it takes to be a Manchester United player – that’s where the club needs to be.
“The club has lost its identity, it’s lost that family feel, if you like. Whether it’s Ole [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer] or Michael, this is an opportunity to bring that back, bring the spirit of Manchester United back to the football club.
Asked if he would join Carrick’s coaching staff, he said, “Of course I would. It’s a no-brainer. I’m not begging a job here by the way. Just so everyone knows, if I was asked to go in of course I would. Appointing the manager is the most important thing.”
Manchester United need a quality manager
Manchester United are now looking to bring a quality replacement for Ruben Amorim, who was sacked last week. Carrick is likely to be handed the job until the end of the season. It will be interesting to see if he can turn things around and convince the club hierarchy to give him the job permanently, although it looks unlikely.
Manchester United have been quite disappointing in recent weeks, and they will look to bounce back strongly. They need a manager who can bring out the best in the current squad and lift the club’s spirits. Bringing figures like Carrick and Rooney back into the club in some capacity will certainly appease the fans. They know the club well and could motivate the players and fans.
Carrick and Rooney have won major trophies with Manchester United as players, and they know what it takes to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world. They might be able to motivate the current set of players to perform at a higher level and help Manchester United return where they belong.
