Hugo Lloris is optimistic about remaining at Tottenham beyond this season, although he refused to close any doors over returning to Ligue 1.
Hugo Lloris is considered one of the top professional goalkeepers in world football. Captaining the France and Tottenham squad over the years, the veteran star has developed a solid reputation, which has led to him being linked with high-profile moves.
It’s somewhat surprising how Lloris has remained at Spurs and not played for some of the elite sides in Europe. PSG have seen their name linked with the keeper over the years, although that door might be shut for good, considering their acquisition of Gianluigi Donnarumma in the summer.
However, the Frenchman continues to perform at the highest level while he also led the French national team to FIFA World Cup triumph in 2018. Unfortunately, he has failed to win a title while at Tottenham, which could finally prompt him to leave the club at the end of his contract in 2022.
Barcelona had been linked with the experienced Frenchman earlier this year, while Lloris could also be offered a chance to return to Ligue 1. Given his advancing age, a return to France might be enticing for the keeper who might be looking forward to possibly his last big contract.
Speaking to the media after France’s recent win over Kazakhstan, Lloris suggested he might prefer to stay put at Tottenham beyond his current deal that ends in 2022. Although from his comments on Transfer Market Web, he is not ready to close the door on a return to Ligue 1.
Lloris said, “My contractual situation? I’m not worried. I have always given Spurs my priority; we will have discussions in the coming months. We have to rectify the situation, which is not ideal and meet the demands of Conte and our new staff.
“I am not closing any doors. I take pleasure in the performance when there are ambitions, precise objectives, a well-defined framework of work, a well-defined style of play, a working philosophy.
“That’s what matters to me. I always gave my priority to Spurs because there was a project, and I feel very good about it. I am still looking for a trophy with the club but that does not detract from what we have been able to do in recent years.”
