Alex McLeish has backed ‘improved’ star Adama Traore to join Tottenham this month, citing his impact against tight defences.
Tottenham are looking to sign players suited to Antonio Conte’s system this month. The Italian tactician wants to impose his ideas on the squad and make a positive impact in the second half of the season. Spurs are aiming to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, and the former Inter Milan manager has been unhappy with his current options.
Conte is desperate for Tottenham to sign a right wing-back this month. To that end, Adama Traore has emerged as his preferred target, and Spurs are making headway in their efforts to sign the Wolverhampton Wanderers man. Things are a bit complicated as Bruno Lage considers the Spanish international important to his plans.
However, with his contract expiring in 18 months, Wolves might be tempted to cash in now, with Tottenham plotting an £18 million move for the 25-year-old winger. Conte is confident to use his qualities, and many agree with the thought process.
While Traore has shown an inclination towards joining Barcelona, he may not be an option for the Blaugrana this month, considering they have already made a huge outlay on bringing in Ferran Torres from Manchester City. Tottenham may be his only viable option to get out of Wolves in the ongoing window and probably play in Europe next season.
Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish has given his approval to the signing. Speaking to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa boss suggested Traore could be a great option to unlock defences and provide a great outlet for Tottenham.
McLeish said, “I really like the improvement from Traore. That’s happened at Wolves. Way back in the day at Barcelona, we felt he was just very quick, but he never had the end product. He never knew when to stop running.”
“We wanted him to show us a bit of technique. I think he has definitely proven to be a handful for defences. I would like to see somebody like Adama at Spurs. I’d love to see that player at Spurs. It sounds like it could happen. I’m sure he could create for the other players.”
Whether Tottenham will be able to sign Traore before the January transfer window slams shut remains to be seen. But with Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal blowing hot and cold, Traore could be an ideal addition to the Tottenham squad.
