Ruben Amorim reacts to criticism from former Manchester United players

Manchester United have had a disappointing start to the Premier League season, and Ruben Amorim has been criticised heavily.

The Portuguese International has been backed with quality players during the summer window, and Manchester United were expected to push for a place in the top four this season. They were expected to do well in the domestic cup competitions as well. However, they have already crashed out of the English League Cup, and it seems unlikely that they will be able to finish in the top four.

Naturally, the Portuguese manager has been criticised, and there have been questions regarding his system. His tactics have not managed to bring out the best in his players. Former Manchester United players have criticised his system and have called for a change.

Reacting to the criticism, the Portuguese manager explained that Manchester United’s struggles have nothing to do with the system.

“It’s normal, we cannot run away from the results,” the Portuguese said via Standard.

“Then you have the baggage from last season. Last season doesn’t matter to me, in relation to the system we have already spoken about that.

“We had six games this season and we have lost three.

“If we lost against Arsenal because of the system? It’s your job to make the opinions.

“When you saw the game against City, was the first thought that you had when the game started about the system?

“I don’t think you thought about the system at that moment, nor against Brentford. The way we concede goals, create chances, that has nothing to do with the system, that is my opinion.

“I am not saying this team will do better in a different system, that’s not my point. My point is if I look at the games we did not win, the most important thing when I watched the game is not that we lost because of the system. That is my opinion, then people have different opinions and that’s ok.”

It will be interesting to see if Manchester United can bounce back strongly in the coming weeks. They have quality players at their disposal, and they should be doing a lot better. A club of their stature should be competing in European football regularly. It remains to be seen whether they can get back to that level.

They have spent substantial amounts of money, and they cannot afford to finish in the bottom half of the league table once again.

Amorim is under a lot of pressure, and it would not be a surprise if he is shown the door in the coming weeks. The results will need to improve drastically in order for the Portuguese manager to hold onto his job. Manchester United have been linked with managers like Oliver Glasner recently.
