Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel ripped into Andre Onana following comeback win over Brentford.
As quoted by The Sun, Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has made his feelings clear about Andre Onana following the win over Brentford last Saturday at Old Trafford.
The Cameroonian star once again failed to clear his lines and should have done better to prevent Brentford’s opener. Given his other gaffes in a red shirt this season, it is fair to say that he has struggled to emerge as a reliable replacement for David de Gea.
With Erik ten Hag keen to implement his brand of football at Old Trafford, it is imperative that he has a ball-playing goalkeeper who is also a reliable last line of defence. Onana was a beast at Inter Milan but appears to be a pale shadow of his former self at Old Trafford.
Schmeichel knows a thing or two about holding the fort down and has now taken a pop at Onana for his gaffes. He fears the Red Devils’ number one is losing the trust of his teammates. After all, Scott McTominay cannot be expected to bail him out every week.
“He’s upset the whole team. Now they will even more not trust him, and my God, it’s not good.”
While every goalkeeper makes mistakes, Onana’s technique appears to be costing him on a regular basis. Schmeichel believes it is a technical issue that the shot-stopper needs to address sooner rather than later.
“My theory here is he’s just lifting up, he’s not setting off, his arm is coming up to go down, whereas as a goalkeeper you learn to dive along around for the ball, you don’t go up to come down.”
Onana is vocal in accepting his mistakes but accountability without improvement is like a blunt pencil-pointless. The Cameroonian international is in need to not just improve his technical ability but also adding a semblance of consistency to his game.
It was no secret that Manchester United needed to replace De Gea this summer. But for now, the jury is out on whether Onana’s arrival will do the club more harm than good.
