Paul Parker was less than impressed by Luke Shaw’s recent comments aiming a dig at Manchester United while on international duty with England.

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker slammed Luke Shaw for his recent comments while on international duty. The left-back was among the scorers in England’s win over Switzerland, although his words after that indicated problems at the club level.

Shaw had hinted at unhappiness within Manchester United, saying, “I feel like here when I come here, I always do that; we all love playing for our country. I think everyone does. It’s always important to feel like you’re wanted. Especially here, I always feel that. I’m not saying I don’t at United but especially here, the way things are, I feel wanted, I enjoy my football.”

While he continues to shine with England, Shaw has been below par at the club level this season. The left-back first dealt with fitness issues at the start of the campaign and then has been in and out of Ralf Rangnick’s side, with Alex Telles often preferred in the role.

Shaw’s comments laid bare some of the problems inside Manchester United, with the club enduring one of the most troubled seasons in their recent history. They remain in contention for a top-four finish, although the expectations at the start of the campaign were to challenge for trophies, including the Premier League title.

Paul Parker was less than impressed with the comments made by Shaw. As quoted by Metro, he insisted Shaw should not take a dig at Manchester United while on international duty. He also pointed out that the left-back was in the England squad due to missing personnel than on merit.

After recently slamming Marcus Rashford, Parker took aim at Shaw and said, “He’s getting a good run in the England side because [Ben] Chilwell isn’t fit, and there isn’t anyone at the moment currently pushing him for that spot. I thought Tyrick Mitchell did very well, considering it was his debut. Shaw’s comments were wrong, if I’m being honest.”

“Everyone would have seen that as smug and a dig about what’s going on at Manchester United. When you look at his situation, then you can come out and say that he’s not playing for United as he hasn’t been consistently good enough. It’s as simple as that. You’ve not been doing what you’re supposed to be doing,” he added.

“He’s fortunate that Gareth [Southgate] hasn’t got many left-backs to call on. Going back a bit, but if you weren’t playing for your club team, then you were never going to pay for your international team. He’s a fortunate player, and he shouldn’t be using England to make a dig at people at Manchester United.”

Shaw will be hoping to revive his season by contributing to Manchester United’s run-in for the remaining games left this season. While the club only have a top-four place to achieve as a target this season, the left-back needs to find form imminently.

Fans will be hoping to see Shaw replicate his England form at the club level, and if he does, those recent comments could be forgotten quickly. Manchester United take on Leicester City at Old Trafford this weekend, looking to get their chase for a Champions League qualification on track.
