Paul Merson claims Dominic Solanke is signing of the summer transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur signed Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth earlier this summer, and Paul Merson has lauded the move.

Dominic Solanke had an impressive 2023/24 season with Bournemouth, and he scored 21 goals in all competitions. Naturally, he was on the radar of top clubs this summer. Tottenham needed a reliable finisher leading the line for them, and they decided to make a move for the England international.

It will be interesting to see if Solanke can continue his impressive run of form and hit the ground running at his new club. Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson has now suggested that Solanke could be the signing of the summer. He believes that the 26-year-old striker has the quality to transform Spurs in the attack and he is a good fit for their style of play as well.

He said on Sky Sports, “Dominic Solanke is a really good buy. They needed an out-and-out striker with pace, and he’s that. He’s a presence up there leading the line and he will suit the way Spurs play under Ange Postecoglou.

“At Spurs, Richarlison is a good player on his day, but you need more than on your day. Solanke could be that difference because teams were starting to push up on Spurs and suffocate them, but Solanke’s pace and his threat in behind, that can help stretch the game for Postecoglou’s side.

“That could in turn help James Maddison, who didn’t get much space at all when he returned to the team after his injury. But Solanke will help him get space and, with time and space, Maddison can pick out anybody.”

Solanke could fill the void left by Harry Kane

There is no doubt that the 26-year-old is a reliable finisher. Apart from that, his ability to hold up the ball and bring others into the play could come in very handy. Spurs have missed a complete forward like him since the departure of Harry Kane. Although Son Heung-min and Richarlison did a decent job last season, Tottenham needed to address the problem this summer if they are truly keen on challenging for trophies.

Tottenham will be hoping to secure UEFA Champions League qualification this season and they will look to do well in the domestic competitions as well. Someone like Dominic Solanke could prove to be a transformative addition for them. The striker is at the peak of his powers and he will look to showcase his qualities at a big club now. This is a golden opportunity for him to prove his worth at the highest level.
