Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes that the club have made a big statement with the signings of Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho.
As quoted by Goal.com, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hailed the club for the statement of intent that has been made by the acquisitions of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.
It has been a summer of success thus far for the 20-time English champions. Having snapped up former goalkeeper Tom Heaton on a free transfer to provide squad depth, Manchester United have roped in two world-class players over the past couple of weeks.
First up, Manchester United completed the signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, which was then followed by an agreement to secure the transfer of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, which should be completed imminently as well.
And, speaking of the transfer business that the club have managed to do, Solskjaer insisted that the signings showed the desire and the will of Manchester United to win trophies, iterating that it was a huge statement of intent and ambitions ahead of the upcoming season.
“I think as I’ve said before, every manager would be happy the sooner the earlier the deals are done and this year we’ve managed to get it sorted. The two we’ve got in will make a huge difference for us, this season and long-term, Rapha is in his prime, he’s the same age as Harry, a year older than Eric and a couple years older than Victor,” he said.
“With Jadon, it’s exciting, as a manager you can’t ask for more backing when you’ve got these two in as early as we have. We’ve scrambled before towards end of the window and we’re in a good position.
“I’m very happy getting both our players in, the club shows ambition with one of the most exciting young forwards in world football and one of the most respected centre-backs in the world and one of the most winning CBs in the world, we’ve got different ways of playing as well, I can see different ways of playing with Rapha, I can’t wait to see him, hopefully we can get him in as soon as.”
Elaborating on Varane, Solskjaer revealed how Sir Alex Ferguson also came close to signing him in the past, saying: “Of course, I’m very happy that we’ve managed to get a deal with Real Madrid. He’s a proven winner, a player we’ve followed for many, many years, Sir Alex was very close to signing him, this time around, we’ve got him at the other end of his career, he’s proved what a good person he is, professional and he’s won there.”
Two world-class players, Sancho and Varane should elevate this Manchester United side a great deal, taking them closer to ending the trophy drought. At the same time, Solskjaer must also realise that with the squad at his disposal, there is now no room for slip-ups and no excuses for not adding silverware.
