Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak opens up on Arsenal transfer links

Alexander Isak labelled recent reports about links to Arsenal and his stalled contract talks as pure rumours as he remained coy on his future.

Alexander Isak is probably Newcastle United’s star man at the moment, as he has continued to score vital goals this season. The striker has been prolific since his €70 million move to the Magpies from Real Sociedad a couple of seasons ago, and the club is eager to keep him for the long term.

The Magpies are eager to tie him down to a new deal, although his existing one still has more than three and a half years left to run. Hence, Newcastle United are not worried about losing him anytime soon, although the pressure could mount on them if the striker decides to take on a new challenge.

There have been varying reports about his new deal, with suggestions that talks have hit a snag. Such stories will continue to fuel speculation surrounding his long-term future, as a host of clubs are keen on signing him next summer.

Speaking to the media ahead of representing Sweden during the international break, Isak’s comments on Fotbol Skanalen via Sport Witness suggested the recent reports surrounding his future, as well as links to Arsenal, are pure rumours. The striker did stay coy about his future, as he barely gave anything away in his comments.

Isak said, “Throughout my career, I have never talked about or really commented on the move rumours during the season. There have been many such years where it has been talked about. It doesn’t affect me,” he said when directly asked about the Arsenal rumours.

“I am commenting on my situation in Newcastle, and I have never had any problem there. I am fully focused on my task there and that we will have a fantastic season. There are still great opportunities for that. I have no thoughts about anything else.”

On the claims of his representatives being frustrated with Newcastle United, he said: “The only thing I can say is that a lot of information and rumours often come out. Much of what I read is not true. So that’s about all I can say about the whole thing.”

Meanwhile, if he does not renew his deal with Newcastle United, the €70 million star could leave next summer. Arsenal is interested in signing him and will likely shell out a huge sum to bring him to the Emirates as they continue to look for solutions for their forward line.

The Gunners view Isak as a dream target, and they might have held an interest even before he made his move to St James Park. The one significant factor stopping Isak from leaving Newcastle Untied is Champions League football, and should the Magpies achieve a top-four finish this season, they will exponentially increase their chances of keeping the €70 million star striker.
