Mikel Arteta talks about Arsenal’s top four chances after win over Brentford

Arsenal offer €47 million to sign Chelsea target Riccardo Calafiori, told to pay more.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes that there is still a long way to go for his team to seal a place in the top four, following their win over Brentford.

After dropping points against strugglers Burnley last month, Arsenal have now secured back-to-back wins in the Premier League to keep their hopes of a top-four finish alive.

Having ground out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Wolves last weekend, Mikel Arteta’s side followed it up with a 2-1 victory over London rivals Brentford on Saturday, exacting revenge for their opening day defeat at the hands of the Bees.

The result sees Arsenal move to within just one point of Manchester United, who are in fourth place. The Gunners have two games in hand over the Red Devils, which gives them a distinct advantage in the battle for a spot in the UEFA Champions League for next season.

However, manager Mikel Arteta refused to get carried away and insisted that there was still a long way for Arsenal to go to achieve their objectives.

Speaking after the win against Brentford (h/t Sky Sports), the Spaniard said: “There is a long way to go. But we are a little bit closer today because we won our game. It is what we have to do. You can see with the results how tough it is to win in this league.”

Arsenal will be in action next Thursday as they come up against Wolves at the Emirates. With the Midlands club also emerging as potential dark horses in the race for the European spots, Arteta insisted that the Gunners will need to maintain focus and keep the momentum going as the season approaches its business end.

“So we need to go on Thursday again, prepare very well, against Wolves it is going to be a really difficult match,” Arteta said. “We need to perform well to win and play better and better and better, that’s the aim. We cannot look too far. Things change very quickly. It’s really difficult to win matches in this league.”

Both Manchester United and West Ham United, who are above Arsenal in the table, have been extremely inconsistent of late and it will be up to Arteta and his side to make sure that they make the most of any such slip ups by keeping their winning momentum intact.
