Matthijs de Ligt backs Erik ten Hag for Manchester United success

Matthijs de Ligt has praised new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, claiming he would get the best out of their current players.

Manchester United’s difficult 2021/22 season witnessed a manager depart and another one arriving on a temporary basis. The club’s board received heavy criticism for their uncertain decision-making, particularly for their choice of bringing in an interim manager rather than appointing someone permanently.

Manchester United had extensively searched for a new manager months before the season’s conclusion. Finally, after much deliberation, Manchester United decided to appoint Erik ten Hag after a long, drawn-out process. The Dutchman was by far the favourite choice of the board as well as the fans.

With the former Ajax boss at the helm, many are expecting drastic changes to the club’s fortunes, particularly on the pitch. However, the new Manchester United manager is expected to ring in many changes to the playing squad and look to bring some new players of his choice.

Among those is former Ajax star Frenkie de Jong, with Manchester United reportedly submitting an offer for the Barcelona midfielder. Meanwhile, another one of his other former players, Matthijs de Ligt, has spoken about the new Manchester United manager in the media.

The Juventus defender has praised ten Hag’s methods and claimed he will improve this current Manchester United team next season. His quotes appeared on The Independent as he spoke some kind words about ten Hag in the media during the current international break.

De Ligt said, “He is someone who loves his job, and he loves to work. He’s really into the details. This makes him a really good trainer. He has a lot of qualities (to succeed). We will have to see how he goes. He definitely improves players. He wants to do everything to make his team play better.”

While things rumble on at Manchester United, de Ligt is contemplating his own long-term future at Juventus. The Dutch defender is coincidentally a target for the Red Devils, but he could be looking for a move to a different club in all probability.

Chelsea are also considering a move for the Dutchman, who, if he joins, will probably face off against ten Hag and perhaps some of his former teammates in the Premier League.
