Martin Keown suggests Manchester United to sack Ruben Amorim

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has urged Manchester United to part ways with Ruben Amorim following their defeat to Brentford.

Having secured a win against Chelsea last time out, Manchester United were hoping to build on that result against Brentford. However, things didn’t go according to plan for Ruben Amorim’s team as they suffered yet another defeat on Saturday afternoon.

The Cherries controlled the tempo of the game and dominated the proceedings to claim a 3-1 win. With this defeat, the Red Devils are now 14th on the table after six league outings. On the back of this defeat, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has asked for Amorim to be sacked while speaking on BBC Sport.

He delivered a verdict on the Portuguese manager’s time at the club and compared it with the pressure Graham Potter faced at West Ham before being sacked on Saturday.

Keown wants United to sack Amorim

The 59-year-old said via the Mirror: “It seemed obvious that [Graham] Potter was going to lose his job [at West Ham], so with Amorim, why is it not the same for him?”

“Is it because we’re now the ninth manager in 12 years since Sir Alex Ferguson left? This stubbornness to play the same way – they look very ordinary.

“Mbeumo playing against his old team must be wondering ‘what on earth have I signed for?’ because the team he plays against, his old team, was way better than them today. This is Manchester United in dire trouble right now. Decisions need to be made.”

Amorim’s time at Manchester United

Amorim took charge at Old Trafford towards the end of 2024. He was brought in to replace Erik ten Hag and help the team return to their glory days. The Portuguese warned the fans about a potential storm, as he was about to make significant tactical changes.

They ended up finishing 15th last season, their worst finish in Premier League history. Despite their struggles, the board backed him in the summer and ended up making significant additions to their squad.

However, those efforts have gone in vain as United continue to struggle on the pitch. They have only won two out of their seven games in the new campaign and have suffered defeat on four occasions. While reports suggest the club will look to back Amorim for as long as possible, Keown feels the time has come to part ways with the former Sporting CP boss.

United have made nine managerial changes since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, yet they still haven’t found the stability they once enjoyed under the great man. While they would love to see Amorim turn things around, the clock is ticking, and if results don’t improve, his departure could come sooner rather than later.
