Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane is of the belief that the Red Devils are still a signing or two short to challenge Manchester City and Chelsea.
Speaking on ITV, as relayed by Goal.com, Manchester United legend Roy Keane has delivered his verdict on the club’s transfer business in the ongoing summer window.
Manchester United kicked things off with the free transfer of former academy goalkeeper Tom Heaton, which has been overshadowed by the high-profile transfers of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.
Sancho, who was on the club’s radar since last summer, finally made the switch from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth £73 million while Varane, another long-term target, is on the verge of completing a £34 million transfer from Real Madrid.
It addresses two key issues for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, considering the dearth of quality options on the right flank and the lack of a reliable central defensive partner for captain Harry Maguire. However, ex-skipper Keane, while acknowledging that it is good business, reckons that the Red Devils need one or two more signings to compete at the top.

“Two very good signings, particularly Varane with his experience with the problem at the back. Sancho, a young talented player who did well in Germany. I still think what City have done and Chelsea with Lukaku, United still need one or two into the group to really challenge,” the former Republic of Ireland international said.
In comparison to Manchester United, neighbours Manchester City have splashed a British record transfer fee to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa earlier this week and are pushing ahead with their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur striker and England captain Harry Kane. Chelsea, on the other hand, are on the cusp of re-signing former striker and ex-Red Devil Romelu Lukaku in a deal worth £98 million.
Given that the two teams have further bolstered their ranks from positions of strength, having won the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League respectively, what Kane says does make sense to an extent.
Manchester United came second in England and Europe last term, but will need one or two faces to get to the absolute top. A new central midfielder seems to be on the agenda amid question marks over the future of Paul Pogba while Kieran Trippier has also been linked heavily as Solskjaer eyes competition at right-back for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Whether the 20-time English champions rope in any more players or wrap up their transfer business for the summer remains to be seen.
